Lower gold prices during December helped to drive sales of American Eagle gold coins up nearly 20,000 ounces over November. With total sales at 65,000 ounces of gold, December saw the greatest amount sold in one month since late summer.
American Eagle sales were down slightly in 2011 compared to 2010.

Rising precious metals prices have pushed the price of the 2011-W Proof Platinum Eagle coin to $1,792, up $100 from $1,692. The price increase was influenced by the price of platinum surpassing $1,500 an ounce already in 2012.
Of the 15,000 coins minted, nearly 13,000 coins had already been sold as of mid-January.

In early January, Ron Paul, the third-place presidential candidate in the Iowa Republican caucuses, claimed that Americans have the desire to return to a gold standard, in lieu of the existing paper standard in the United States. This will be an important element of his platform.
The claim comes from a poll of members of the Republican party in only three states, and according to experts, does not accurately represent the wishes of Americans as a whole.

Even though the holiday season has come to an end, Salvation Army volunteers donate their time year-round in order to generate donations for the organization’s many programs.
During a day of fundraising at a local theater in Cleveland County, NC, a Salvation Army volunteer received two gold South African Kruggerand coins worth $1,700 in her red kettle. In addition to the coins, more than $1,000 in cash and check donations was received that day.
