Gold certainly made its mark during the month of October, playing an important role in sports,

Like Italy, Germany and a number of other countries, China now offers vending machines selling gold bars and gold coins to consumers. Strategically positioned in private clubs, banks and noted buildings, the gold vending machines will accept cash or bank card. It is estimated that up to 2,000 vending machines will be positioned throughout the country.

Online auctioneer Proxibid is offering a handsome reward to customers participating in the company’s coins and currency auctions from now until March 2012. Participants that bid on these types of auctions will automatically be entered into a giveaway, and the winner, selected at random each month, will receive a one-ounce gold bar. A total of six gold bars will be given away.

Earlier this month, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish debuted new football helmets during a game against the University of South Carolina. The helmets will maintain the traditional gold color, and will include flakes of 23.9 karat gold to help achieve the proper shade of gold. The gold flakes come from the University’s golden dome, which was regilded in 2005.

Australia-based Perth Mint recently unveiled a gold coin that surpassed the record size for gold coins at 100 kilograms. The new record holder, a Gold Kangaroo Coin, weighs one metric ton, is 80 centimeters in diameter, and is valued at approximately $53.63 million in U.S. dollars. Because of the extremely large size of the coin, Perth Mint hopes to hold the record for years to come.
