A Golden Thanksgiving: Foods to Glam Up Your Holiday Meal

Earlier this month, the American Farm Bureau Federation released data showing that the cost of this year’s Thanksgiving meal will increase 13 percent from last year, the largest increase in a decade. Topping the list is turkey, which increased a whopping 22 percent. Also showing hefty increases are frozen peas (17 percent increase), pumpkin pie mix (16 percent increase) and whipping cream (15 percent increase).
For those with cash to spare, and that wish to step up their Thanksgiving feast, perhaps foods and beverages containing precious metals might do the trick. More and more foods are being created using additive E175 in the form of gold leaf, flake and dust. Silver can also be used in foods with additive E174.
Consider the following examples of foods and drinks that contain gold and silver for your
Thanksgiving meal:
Goldschläger – For this year’s libations, Goldschläger, a popular cinnamon schnapps, can be shared around the table. Goldschläger contains very thin, small flakes of gold leaf. There is less than one tenth of a gram of gold in each bottle of Goldschläger, which in August of this year equated to less than $6 USD of gold.
Barfi – In lieu of pumpkin pie this year, consider Barfi as your new Thanksgiving treat. Barfi is an Indian dessert made of condensed milk and sugar that can sometime resemble the taste of cheesecake. Barfi has been seen topped with a layer of gold or silver leaf, making the dessert truly decadent.
Gold-Flecked Caviar – Skip the relish tray this year, and serve your guests a caviar appetizer adorned with gold flakes. The French company, L'Esturgeonnière, produces high-quality caviar that is topped with flakes of gold. While only a small amount is added per pound, the beauty of this food, sometimes called “gray gold,” can’t be denied.
Precious Metal Meals
If you prefer to stick to the traditional Thanksgiving fare, consider using a gold food spray for your turkey, baked potatoes and more. Available in Germany, the gold food spray can be applied to any food to give the appearance that it is entirely coated in gold.
